IBS & Low FODMAP diet


Did you know Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a Functional Bowel Disorders (FBDs)?

Studies exploring prevalence of IBS, indicate that it effects 8.1% of Australians. Often characterised by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms including:


o Abdominal pain

o Distension

o Excessive flatulence

o Altered bowel habits

o Bloating


The cause of IBS and other FBDs is unclear and likely to be multifactorial. Proposed mechanisms include:


  • Altered gastrointestinal motility

  • Visceral hypersensitivity

  • Impaired perception and processing of information by the brain

  • Low grade inflammation

  • Immune system activation

  • Intestinal permeability

  • Alterations in the gut microbiota
