Studies exploring prevalence of IBS, show that it effects 8.1% of Australians. Characterised by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms including:
o Abdominal pain

o Excessive flatulence
o Altered bowel habits - constipation and or diarrhoea
o Bloating
The cause of IBS and other FBDs is unclear and likely to be multifactorial. Proposed mechanisms include:
Altered gastrointestinal motility
Visceral hypersensitivity
Impaired perception and processing of information by the brain
Low grade inflammation
Immune system activation
Intestinal permeability
Alterations in the gut microbiota
Numerous studies have shown that a low FODMAP diet improves overall functional symptoms, symptom severity and quality of life in people with IBS.
